While serving as pastor of the Grahamwood COG in Memphis I had cause to do an audit of the Church books, suspecting that an embezzlement had taken place. The bank assisted me in this task by providing me with copies of canceled checks and yes money had been taken from the church but more surprising was that a previous pastor (two or three pastors back) had cashed 10-15 checks which were his weekly salaries in a period of about a month. I went to the bank and they were aware of this but explained that as long as the checks had been endorsed by two authorized signatories then there was nothing the bank could do.
I went back to get to the root of this and I found out that at that time the church had fallen behind in debt for several months. They needed several thousand dollars to catch up. (The pastor was having marital problems and was having an affair with the church secretary. He divorced his wife and went with the secretary.)
The pastor was holding back his salary checks and not depositing them. The fundraiser to pay off the church indebtedness was a ploy for him to be able to cash all his undeposited checks. The fundraiser was sufficient to pay the debt. Rather the church was misled to believe the debt would be paid up.
